Prague’s best dinner shows

The Middle Ages can be considered a golden age in Czech lands. Many tales and legends tell of medieval Prague. You can also relive this glorious past in the beautiful vaulted cellar of a tavern (krčma in Czech) by candlelight. Here are the best addresses for restaurants in Prague with medieval dinner shows.

Medieval dining is no tourist trap, and locals also frequent this type of show. Book your evening here quickly!

You’ll dine on a hearty meal, washed down with cold beers like in the good old days, and in a playful atmosphere! There’s even a folklore dinner-show for which you’ll be picked up at your hotel (and brought back there afterwards, of course). Super convenient! Same dinner-show here. I’ve also recently spotted restaurace Michal in the Old Town, an address that complements the following three, but the first, U Pavouka, is really the most popular!

U Pavouka

The «At the spider» tavern is located in the Old Town , and I have to say that feedback from visitors has always been good for this establishment. In the vaulted cellar of a historic building (very nice decor), large wooden tables lit by candlelight for a warm, festive evening and a good medieval meal featuring traditional Czech dishes of course (potato soup, knuckle of pork, roast duck, old-fashioned potato pancakes, pearl barley) but also children’s, vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free menus! All-you-can-eat drinks. The show goes on for 2h30: music, dancers and snake charmers, sword fighting, acrobats and more.

U Krále Brabantského

The restaurant is located in the authentic Malá Strana district, just below the Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral. U Krále Brabantského is one of the city’s oldest inns: since 1375, many myths and legends have been associated with it. In its labyrinthine cellar, the alchemists of Rudolf II, Arcimboldo and Mozart all sat down. Even the king, who used a secret passage from the castle! From time immemorial, this tavern was also a hangout for scoundrels who got drunk here after their crimes… In short, the table of kings and smugglers alike. A medieval musical show takes place on Saturday evening (book here), with sword duels, dancing and juggling…

One of the town’s oldest inns where you can still sleep

You can eat with your fingers, lit by candlelight, pieces of meat grilled over an open fire (very hearty «dish of the knight» but also vegetarian). Stroll around the restaurant and you’ll see that the decor is amazing… The service is a little rough, too, in keeping with the medieval era! Finally, why not spend the night? The UNESCO-listed building (with its lovely period ceilings and superb wooden staircase) houses two pretty apartments for two to four people upstairs. To book an apartment. What’s more, shows are free for hotel guests! The U Krále Brabantského hostel is located in a quiet side street, within walking distance of everything you need to know.

U sedmi Švábů

Still in Malá Strana (because there are quite a few medieval restaurants near the Castle), this tavern takes us back to the very end of the 15th century, with a dozen-course banquet on Friday and Saturday evenings, unlimited alcohol and a medieval program with fire-eaters and gypsy dancers. It’s an opportunity to discover the hearty Czech cuisine by candlelight (including some vegetarian dishes, such as the famous fried onion and cabbage cakes).
