Prague souvenir: take a picture of yourself!

In Prague, you'll find some great souvenirs (but beware of the tourist traps). It's also a very photogenic city. In fact, why not take home a souvenir photo of Prague? Not of the city (but don't forget of course to take a picture of the famous string of bridges), but of you!

There are two options, one very inexpensive with a photo booth from the past and the other much more sophisticated with portraits by photographer Honza Sakař and his small studio near the Castle. I highly recommend both!

Vintage selfies

Installed in Prague by the Franco-Czech company Fotoautomat -which repairs and revives them in or in front of cultural institutions-, these two booths are stamped Fotoautomat Prague. They allow you to take a souvenir photo as quickly as in the 50's or 60's: four silver and black and white photos in four exposures for 120 CZK or less than 5 EUR. You'll find these two booths in front of the New Stage of the National Theatre of Brutalist Architecture (Národní 4, with a very nice NONA café upstairs) or in the U Nováků passage (Vodičkova 28).

Honza Sakař's retro portraits

Honza Sakař is a tintype photographer, using an old-fashioned technique for a most original rendering. In his pretty little studio on the first floor (Fotograf na plech, Vlašská 6), the photographer will passionately tell you all about the process, which sees the use of wet collodion. This process was mainly used in the United States until the interwar years. The session, a real trip back in time, lasts 1h-1h30 and allow another 1h for the print (take the opportunity to stroll around the Castle, Charles Bridge, the John Lennon Wall or the nearby Petřín Park in the pretty Malá Strana district) or simply stay and chat with the friendly Honza. Beware, this technique is the antithesis of digital photography: there's only one exposure, and you'll leave not with a Polaroid, but a well-packaged sheet of tin to slip into your suitcase. This very special souvenir will last you hundreds of years. Different prices for different formats: 3500 CZK or 140 EUR for the classic 18×24 cm.
